BOLT ON PROCESS

BOLT-ON PROCESS – AN INNOVATION THAT MAKES SEAWATER DESALINATION ECONOMICALLY AFFORDABLE -

80 PERCENT OF MORE THAN 13,000 DESALINATION SYSTEMS AROUND THE WORLD HAVE REVERSE OSMOSIS MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY REPRESENTING APPROXIMATELY 45 PERCENT OF INSTALLED CAPACITY. THERE IS A CONSENSUS THAT REVERSE OSMOSIS HAS REACHED AN INFLECTION POINT. PERFORMANCE METRICS THAT MUST BE IMPROVED TO SUSTAIN THE GROWTH ARE: 1. % RECOVERY; 2. SEC (kWh/m3); 3. FOULINNG (BIO, COLLOIDAL, RED ALGAE); 4. CONCENTRATE DISPOSAL / REDUCTION; 5. CAPEX; 6. OPEX; 7. INCREASE UPPER LIMIT OF TDS ABOVE ~ 65,000 PPM IN CONCENTRATE.

AbTech Industries has gained subject matter expertise in desalination and high TDS applications like produced water, expanded the application scope of its patented Smart Sponge technology to mitigate the insidious and costly (OPEX) problem of biofouling, obtained collaborative input and developed product centric intellectual property to engineer multiple flow sheets that are cohesively integrated to address the opportunity of improving the seven performance metrics.

It is a privilege to inform you that we have developed PFDs or flow sheets augmented by mass balances expected to deliver the following results:

  1. PERMEATE RECOVERY improved from ~43 percent to ~ 75 percent;

  2. SPECIFIC ENERGY CONSUMPTION (SEC) maintained at ~5.3 Osmotic Hydrolic Power and Waste Energy Combined  kWhr / m3  in spite of high total dissolved solids;

  3. FOULING: ACTIVE INGREDIENT in Smart Sponge PLUS directly attacks Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Sphingomonas, spp., and nine other    bacterial strains with a kill percent >> 95% and EBRT of 30 seconds // red algae (red tide) flow sheet in development;

  4. CONCENTRATE DISPOSAL / REDUCTION: The ‘BOLT-ON’ process can reduce discharge to the ocean or an inland location from ~57 percent to ~25 percent;

  5. CAPEX: The ‘BOLT-ON’ process does not require new seawater intake infrastructure, nor does it require new pretreatment to address suspended solids. The feed is the SWRO concentrate. Estimated CAPEX is $500/m3. (ROI ~ 1.8 years)

  6. OPEX: ~ 10 percent less than conventional SWRO system

  7. UPPER LIMIT OF TDS: GOAL is to reach 220,000 ppm. Robust membrane and element construction is in review.

  • The boundary limits of the reverse osmosis desalination process  are based on the upper limit of the TDS  in the feed and the concentrate >>> ~45% recovery  and ~65,000 ppm TDS in the concentrate.

  • Is 45% recovery and 65,000 ppm TDS in the concentrate a Point of inflection for Reverse Osmosis on the Technology ‘S’ curve  where the second order derivative is negative ?

  • By expanding the bandwidth of utility of polymeric materials used in manufacturing membranes, ion exchange resins, functional adsorbents and by applying research  science of membranology, bio-enzymes and polypeptides, organic osmolytes plus chemical  engg--- we believe we can  push the inflection point back several yrs.
